Joe S:
Dan, I feel as though the Journal and other local media outlets do a poor job of promoting awareness of social/cultural events. Without the necessary promotion these events often suffer from poor attendance and then the city loses out on getting future events scheduled. Why is this such a low priority for the Journal?
Dan Mayfield:
Dude, I don't plan to chat and sound like a jerk, but do you read the paper? We're always covering cultural events. Did you see today's paper? Did you see Sunday's arts section? If the annual Spanish Market isn't a cultual event, what is? If the Tempest opera isn't, what is? We did a huge thing on the Chinese New Year. I wrote about the Hummingbird Festival last week in Ruidoso. The Duke City Shootout, going on right now, is a huge deal. Have you been to those cultual events? Sure, it's movie culture, but that a lot of cultural. Pretty much everything I write is about a social event, like 300 of them annually.
blueser:
what is the best movie today at theaters - in your opinion/
Dan Mayfield:
Well, Blueser, I think Scanner Darkly is cool. It's a complete rip off off a bunch of old Ralph Bakshi cartoons - rotoscope and all. And speaking of Bakshi, did you know he'll be speaking at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Friday night? If you don't know bakshi, do a quick google search of his name or "Fritz The Cat"
blueser:
when does the balloon fiesta edition being published? I want to mail it to out of town guests.
Dan Mayfield:
It's the Friday that the Fiesta begins. This year, it should be around October 6. We don't get advance copies, however.
blueser:
What is the greatest show coming up in August?
Dan Mayfield:
In August..hmm.
I like the KC and The Sunshine Band show next week at The Pavilion. Also, Foreigner, Cheech Marin and Friends, and the incomparable Smokey Robinson are all coming up.
I think, however, that the two reggae shows coming up are going to be the big ones. On Aug. 28, we'll get Reggae Sunsplash with Maxi Priest and UB40, and then on the 18th, The Marley Brothers with Bunny Wailer will perform. I can't wait to see Bunny Wailer in person. He's never been to New Mexico.
blueser:
When my friends from out of town come for the balloon fiesta what are some non-balloon things not to miss?
Dan Mayfield:
Well, there's a whoooolee looot.
Of course you can do the Old Town thing, the museum thing, Santa Fe, there will be concerts and all kinds of stuff. What are your friends into?
blueser:
what other movies are good this weekend
Dan Mayfield:
I hate to admit it, Blueser, but I think that "Miami Vice" is a gonna rock. I can rememebr sitting at home watching that show and being mesmorized by Crockett's Ferrari and Tubbs' Cigarette Boat. The music, the crime, the hot women. The TV show had it all and the movie, apparently, has it too. And, just like the original, the plot of the movie is just as confusing as the plots in the show. It's eye candy, not Naked Lunch.
Persephone:
I'm in a musical quandary. I'm bored with all the new music out there. I saw some alt-country in Seattle when I was there, and that was exciting. What's exciting on the music scene in Albuquerque?
Dan Mayfield:
In Albuquerque, if you like pop music, the new Giranimals CD is great. It's a fun pop romp though music that sounds The Sundays, circa 1992. There's also Lousy Robot. These guys have a Phil Specter-esquie sound that brings me back to the Everly Bros. with some modern rock thrown in. If you dig the Alt.country thing, check out The Handsome Family's new disk, or the CD they just did with Edith Grove. I've got it on my desk right now.
blueser:
what is the "must see" for the kids before school starts in two weeks.
Dan Mayfield:
Two weeks and summer break is over? Wow. Cars, of course. Monster House is a good kids one too - and there's enough adult jokes to keep those of older than 7 entertianed.
blueser:
Ihave never been to the Santa Fe Oprs. What is proper apparel?
Dan Mayfield:
Proper apparel. Well, when I go I usually dress business casual. But, it's not out of place to see me in jeans-but with a sport coat and button up shirt and cowboy boots. For the ladies, however, a nice summer dress is fine - but bring a sweater 'cause it gets cold about 10 p.m. outdoors. If you're sitting up front, however, a nice pant suit or a cocktail dress is recommend.
droptop:
I'm a 28 year old guy, and
I'm looking for an awesome car that isn't too vintage? Recommendations?
Dan Mayfield:
Not too vintage. Well, look at the early 2000s Trans Ams. Don't laugh, they're great cars, haul ass, and don't look too bad. If you want a sedan or something, look at the late 90s Infinities and BMWs. It all depeneds on what your budget and needs are. If I had the cash, I'd be in an XJR myslef.
Persephone:
Thanks for the tip about Handsome Family and Giranimals. I will check that out. What's the best place for cutting edge live music in ABQ?
Dan Mayfield:
In the alt.country realm, I'd say hit up Harlow's on The Hill and Kelly's. Both are in Nob Hill and cater to the college kids' tastes in music. Then, for rock, come downtown to Burt's and The Atomic. Your'e sure to see some sort of good stuff.
blueser:
Joe -

Without the Journal I'd be lost looking for arts and culture events.
Dan Mayfield:
Thanks for the props, B.
blueser:
droptop -

there is a coool SAAB Vigen convert for sale is you want fast
Dan Mayfield:
Yeah...A Viggen rocks.
Persephone:
I'm curious as to whether you have heard The Bitter Sermon, playing at Gulp! And if not, then, what local bands have you heard lately that you'd recommend?
Dan Mayfield:
Yeah. Funny enough, I'm going to hear the BS boys tonight at Gulp! for a friend's book party. The BS are a funny, and they have a host of great beer-drinkin' songs.
droptop:
late Trans Am huh? I was thinking of something a little less discontinued and a little better on gas mileage. I do like the Jag suggestion.
Dan Mayfield:
I love my XJ8 now. But bad, bad, on gas. 14 in town.
I'd say look at an s-type, then. There's a lot of great ones coming off lease now - but don't skimp. Get the V8. The 6 is nice, but the 8 roars.
If you like that idea, then look at a 540i or even a Q45. They haul balls. I'm not the Journal's auto reporter, but I'm the resident "Car Guy"
droptop:
Any idea when the Eyeliners are playing next? And while I'm at it, any idea if the Shins will ever come back for a concert?
Dan Mayfield:
The eyeliners are unfortunalty on hiatius. I saw Gel at the bar last week and she was telling me that they're just chillin for a while. But, you can always see their video at Blackheart Records' web site - Joan Jett's record label.
The Shins. Ha. I think if they ever did come back, they'd get beat down in some back alley for claiming that they're now "From Portland." I guess the boys forgot about their 505 roots.
Persephone:
I mean, you are one of ABQ's hottest singles. I figured you'd impress ...
Dan Mayfield:
Well, don't believe everything that you read......
Persephone:
OK -- another question -- if you were really wanting to impressive a new love interest, what kind of evening would you put together?
Dan Mayfield:
Ohh, Persephone.
So first, I'd take her to dinner at Scalo or Ambrozia. We'd wander around Old Town talking and walking for a while and getting to know each other, then we'd maybe go to a show Downtown, some kind of mutually-interesting music. I'd dig up something odd, or cool, to takke her to like an Icky And The Yucks punk rock show, or The Surflords. Then, of course, we'd go back to my house and go for a naked swim with a bottle of cheap red wine.
And, of course, I'd have a fresh stock of eggs, coffe, orange juice, and fire up the waffle iron early.
droptop:
LOL @ the Shins.

Great car stuff. Thanks. Any bike suggestions? I'm kinda on the fence between a bike or a new car. I drool all over a Duc that parks near me downtown on a daily basis.
Dan Mayfield:
I'm all 'bout bikes....too bad I wrecked mine.
Anyway, have you been to the Triumph dealership? PJ's has some sweet bikes. If I had the money, I'd love to get my hands on a Thruxton or a Speed 4. Also, the Suzuki xv650 is a sweet ride, and man those bikes are fast. It's kind of a sport bike, but it has more of a standard riding position, and it looks just weird enough....
droptop:
On that date topic: what kind of wine and what style eggs?
Dan Mayfield:
Wine? Red. Of course. I'd probably get something from St. Clair winery near old town. $20 gets you a bottle there of stuff that's locally made and that's as good as any $30 bottle you'd get at the grocery store.

Eggs...well...I like to spice them up with some sausage, maybe some peppers and tomatoes. And, a little Bailies never hurt the coffee.
soccergirl:
What would the hot ABQ single coverboy have to suggest a girl do for fun on the Westside?
Dan Mayfield:
Westside, huh. Well, have you been to the Tap Room? It's a cool and friendly little bar out there. And have you been to Our Place? It has a little stage where you can hear jazz, blues and rock bands doing covers of 80s metal.
I think you're gonna have to make your own fun out there. Try having friends over for a Sunday brunch. Try organizing a video game night, or a cocktail party. Unfortunalty, there aren't many places to "go" out there.
I think the only real activity on the West Side is driving. Driving up and down Coors.
droptop:
Good stuff, Dan. Thanks!
Dan Mayfield:
Sure. By the way, if you're looking at cars, don't even look at a Miata. Man, I hear from this girl I work with that it's impossible to get the suspension set up right.....
droptop:
The key thing with Miatas is to get springs that don't bottom out...
;-)
Dan Mayfield:
Ha.
Yeah, and turbo kits that work, too.
